HAMMOND—Tournament host St. Thomas and the Amite Lady Warriors scored convincing wins to advance in the opening round of the Ladies Veritas Challenge

Wednesday with the Lady Falcons cruising to a 65-26 win over Ascension Catholic and Amite besting Covington 76-55. Northshore ripped the Destrehan Lady Cats 61-31 and the Loranger Lady Wolves came out on the short end of a “Free Throw Festival,” in which both teams went to the line a total of 49 times, 57-42.
    The Lady Falcons did not allow the Lady Bulldogs of Ascension Catholic to score more than eight points in any period while averaging a little over 16 points per period in route to a solid 65-26 win. Senior Beth Hagan led the effort scoring 12 points, while freshman Kelseigh Hughes added 11 more for the winners. For the Lady Bulldogs, Allison Falcon finished with 10 points.
    Both teams struggled from the free throw line with the Lady Falcons going only 16-of-29 from the line, while the Lady Bulldogs managed only 8-for-22 from the free stripe.
    The Amite Lady Warriors got double-digit performances from seniors Dominique Ginn, Chelsea Daniels, and Tiffany Foster to lift Amite over Covington 76-55. The three seniors score 18, 17, and 13 respectively. Covington’s Tyerra Bickham paced the Lady Lions effort tossing in 24 points, while teammate Kelsie Gasson added 12 more.
    The Northshore Lady Panthers doubled the point total plus one (21-10) of their opponent in the first period and never looked back rolling to a 61-36 victory over Destrehan. Junior Casey Hanlon worked the perimeter for 19 points and sophomore Jordyn Beaudette poured in 12 more to pace Northshore. Destrehan’s Tawanne Lee matched Hanlon’s total of 19 to lead the Lady Cats.

throw line between the two teams. St. Joseph’s won the game 57-42 and benefited most from the free throw festival making 35 trips to the line and cashing in 25. The Lady Wolves went to line 14 times, but collected only seven points. Four Loranger starters fouled out and a fifth started finished the game with four fouls.
    St. Joseph Junior SiMon Franklin led all scorers with 17 points and teammate Meagan Duncan led had 10. For Loranger, Whitney Anthony paced the Lady Wolves with 11 points and Joycelyn Willie added seven more all scored at the free throw stripe.
    Action resumes on Thurday at 3:45 p.m. when Covington takes on Ascension Cathloic and Loranger battles Destrehan at 5:00 p.m. in the early games. St. Thomas tips off against Amite in the next game at 6:15 p.m. and Northshore goes against St. Joseph in the final game of day two at 7:30 p.m.
