HAMMOND—In a night that saw four teams win by double-digits including tournament
host St. Thomas, who routed Albany 86-43 in the nightcap game, it was a hard fall
by St. Thomas senior Josh Millazo that took center

stage causing players and
fans to collectively turn their concerns away from basketball and on
the health of the injured senior. The fall occurred after a break-a-way layup
with less than three minutes left in the third period and resulted in a 36-minute
delay as school officials and medical personnel worked to stabilize a broken
arm and treat additional injuries.
“At first I thought Josh was just bruised a bit, but when I
walked over and saw his arm my heart just sank,” said St. Thomas head coach Errol
Gauff. “Here is a kid that came to us barely over five feet tall and who has worked
as hard as anyone in the weight room and on the practice court to become one of our
better three-point shooters.”
Millazo is one of six seniors playing for Coach Gauff
this season. “This group of seniors has been playing together for a long time
and are real close,” continued Gauff. “It’s tough on them to see one of their
own take a nasty fall up close and then watch him wheeled out on a stretcher.
Josh told me before they took him to the hospital that he just wanted to play.”
The Covington Lions and the Vandebilt Catholic Terriers
opened tournament play with the Terriers getting the best of the Lions 59-47.
Vandebilt Catholic held the Lions to just 12 points in first half while
scoring 31. Sophomore Dequiante Brown and junior Evan Mistich each had eight
points to pace the first half surge by the Terriers. Brown finished with 20 points
leading all scorers. Freshman Joel Bailey was tops for the Lions with eight.
“This is a young group,” said Vandebilt Catholic head coach
Rafe Blades. “Our guards did a good job of creating opportunities in the paint with some
good ball movement.”
The Pelicans of Port Allen roughed up the St. Charles
Catholic Comets 72-51 in the second game of the evening. Port Allen opened the
first period with 12-1 run and took a 41-14 lead by halftime. The Comets
did pull to within 12 at 42-54 with 4:59 left to play, on the strength
senior Jonathan Bonura’s 15 second-half points but it was not enough as
the Pelicans out-scored the Comets 22-19 in the final period to secure the double-digit win.
Four Pelicans finished in double figures. Sophomore William Nelson
led with 19 points followed by junior Damion Dixon with 17. Senior Jadd Collins
and junior Thomas James had 12 and 10 respectively for the winners. Bonura
finished with 19 for the Comets.
Defending state champs Reserve Christian showed their strength in the
third game of the night as they put up 84 points on Slidell in route to a 24-point win.
“We have group of young, inexperience kids this year who are trying
to carry on the

tradition that came before them,” said Reserve Christian head coach
Tim Byrd. “One of the things they do well is crash the offensive boards as a group.
We are getting rebounds based on numbers rather than just depending on one or two kids.”
Junior Eddren McCain led Reserve Christian with 23 points and
freshman Cedric Jenkins added 20 more. For Slidell, sophomore Logan Jordan and senior
Cedric Cooper each had 10.
St. Thomas led Albany by only five (18-13) at the end of the
opening period in the finale. However, the Falcons outscored the Hornets 68-28 the rest
of the way to post an impressive 86-43 win.
“We play with as many as four guards on the floor at
times,” said Gauff. “Yet, we worked the ball well inside tonight scoring off turnovers.”
Sophomore Raymone Andrews led a trio of Falcons in double
figures with 16 points. Junior Stephen Burchess had 13 and junior Thaddeus
Showers added 11 more. Sophomore Terry Jackson paced the Hornets with 17.
Second round action begins Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 with
Covington playing Slidell. Albany matches up against St. Charles in the second
game. Vandebilt Cathoic and Reserve Christian are paired in the third, and Port
Allen plays host St. Thomas in the nightcap.
