HAMMOND—The St. Thomas Falcons defended their Veritas Challenge Championship
title in high fashion Wednesday night outscoring the Vandebilt Catholic

26-8 in the third period in route to a 70-44 win. The win came a day after
Falcon head coach Errol Gauff celebrated his birthday.
“We a very proud to win this tournament and defend our
title,” said Gauff. “The quality of competition this year makes it especially
sweet to win it again.”
The Falcons and Terriers played close to the best for
the first two quarters with the Falcons taking a 27-24 edge at the half. However,
the St. Thomas man-to-man pressure became too much for Vandebilt Catholic
in third period as the Falcons went on a 26-8 run scoring multiple times
off steals created by some outstanding defensive play.
“We tell our players to work hard on defense on every possession
and good things will eventually happen for them,” said Gauff. “The guys created
turnovers and made some big shots and we were able to put some distance between us and them.”
Junior Thaddeus Showers, who was named the tournament MVP, led the Falcon second half charge
scoring 14 of his game high 23 points in the second half. Seniors Patrick Coudrain
and Michael Williams each added nine more points for the winners.
Junior Evan Mistich led Vandebilt Catholic with 15 and junior
Deshawn Patterson was next with 14.
The Port Allen Pelicans fought off a late rally by Reserve
Christian to claim the third place trophy in the consolation game with a 56-49. After
jumping out to a 26-11 lead at the halfway mark, the Pelicans were outscored
38-30 in the second half but hung on for the win. Freshman Cedric Jenkins
cored 16 of his 20 points in the second half to lead the Reserve Christina
rally. For the Pelicans, sophomore William

led in scoring with 15 and 13 points respectively.
In the two early consolation games, St. Charles Catholic won a
57-56 thriller over Covington High and Slidell hit 19 three-point shots to crush
Albany 110-60. Freshman Austin Martin paced St. Charles Catholic with 14 points,
while senior Adam Crockett had 12 points for Covington. Slidell had five players
in double figures. Sophomore Kenyatti Crisp was tops with 18 points followed by
Andrew Winston with 15, Chris Smith with 13, Cedric Cooper with 11 and Cranston Smith with 10.
