PONCHATOULA—The “rich got richer,” one “got even,” and another withdrew on day two of the Ponchatoula Invitational Tournament Thursday. Host Ponchatoula and McDonogh 35 went 2-0 with double-digit wins, Salmen

evened their tournament mark at 1-1 with a win, and Starkey Academy withdrew from tournament play.
The Salmen Lady Spartans overcame a first period deficit and out-scored the St. Charles Lady Comets 36-14 in the next two stanzas to secure a solid 50-37 win in the day’s first game. The Lady Spartans evened their tournament mark to 1-1 and were led by Cydney Holden who tossed in 17 points. Chelseas James and Kristy Campbell added 9 and 8 more respectively for the winners. Michalle Marzoni paced the Lady Comets with 18 points and teammate Brooke Becker added 11 more.
The Ponchatoula JV team filled in for Starkey Academy, who withdrew, in the second game. The Lady Wave JV out-scored the Christian Life JV 23-3 in the second period to take a 33-10 advantage at the half and coasted the rest of the way for the win. Antoniette Pea paced the Lady Wave effort with 17 points, while Patrice Worjloh was tops for Christian Life with 20.
The West Feliciana Lady Saints, who drew a bye in the first round, battled host, Ponchatoula to within three points (8-11) at the end of one, but could not contend with the Lady Wave’s pressure defense as Ponchatoula outscored the Lady Saints 51-19 over the final three periods to get the win.
“Our defense opened things up for tonight”, said Ponchatoula head coach Justin Adams. “We were not getting a lot of good looks inside the paint early in the game, but

our defensive pressure got us in a rhythm, and we starting making shots outside. Of course that loosened things up inside and we were able to score in the paint in the second half.”
Three Ponchatoula starters finished in doubled figures. Jennifer Foster, Desiree Dotey, and Hannah Griggs all scored 12 points, while Chelsee LaMarca added another eight for the winners. For the Lady Saints, Maddie Hall and Asia Wright each had eight.
In the nightcap game, the Roneagles of McDonogh 35 continued their romp through the tourney as they crushed the Lutcher Lady Bulldogs 70-30. Four players finished with double-digit scoring totals with India Chaney leading all scorers with 22 followed by Jamey Ellis with 14 and Jasime Nelson and Shavane Butler each with 11. Tireara Dominick led Lutcher with 14.
Tournament play on Friday starts at 5:30 with two games slated. The early match up will feature two in parish teams as Ponchatoula battles Loranger. Check back for more updates.
