PONCHATOULA—The opening round of the Ponchatoula Tournament proved to
be a “one-sided” affair as four teams scored decisive, double-digit
victories. “Usually,

the first day of any tournament is unpredictable,” said
Ponchatoula girls’ head basketball coach and tournament host Justin
Adams. “Early season tournaments offer teams that may not meet in the regular
season a chance to play and see how they match up against each other.”
In the first game, the Lutcher Lady Bulldogs overcame a one-point
deficit (7-8) after one period and rallied to hand the St. Charles Lady Comets a
42-29 setback in the opening game. Randi Donald led the winners with 14 point and
teammate Angela Webster added 11 more. Brooke Becker paced St. Charles with 12 points.
Powerhouse McDonogh 35 jumped out to a 32-2 first period lead over
the Starkey Academy Lady Spartans in the second game and cruised to an 85-12 win. McDonogh
35 had five players in double-figures with Chelseney Lewis leading all scorers with 23
points and Jamey Ellis, Jasmine Nelson, India Chaney, and Shavane Butler scoring
16, 14, 12 and 10 points respectively. Haley Sanchez led Starkey with 8.
In the third game, host Ponchatoula out-scored the Salmen Lady
Spartans 40-10 in the first half and coasted the rest of the way to a 68-37 win.
Desiree Doty and Hannah Griggs scored in double-figures for the Lady Wave with
11 and 10 points respectively. Megan Berner added 9 more for the winners.
For Salmen, Chelsea James was tops with 10 points.
The Loranger Lady Wolves completed the series of

games with 45-21 rout of Christian Life in the nightcap and delivered new head coach Amy Willie her first win.
“I was very pleased with the effort tonight,” said Loranger head coach
Amy Willie. “The girls played very agressive on defense, but were disciplined and stayed away from committing a lot of fouls.”
The Lady Wolves started fast jumping out to a 21-8 first period lead and never looked back as they led
30-11 by halftime. Whitney Anthony sparked the scoring for Loranger with
16 points, while Ashley Perkins had 13 and Dana Bruno 5. Patrice Worelah
led Christian Life with 8.
Day two action begins Thursday at 3:30 p.m. Check back for
more updates and progress reports.
