Roneagles to the wire before losing 37-34 in the championship game of the Ponchatoula Invitational Tournament on Saturday. Ponchatoula was impressive on defense in limiting the Roneagles to just 37 points, but poor 9-of-21 shooting from the free throw line prevented the Lady Wave from securing the upset.
“This was just a great atmosphere today for high school basketball with two good teams playing hard,” said Ponchatoula head coach Justin Adams. “We did a solid job on defense, but our shooting was just not there today.”
Trailing by just one at 34-35 with time running out in the final period, Ponchatoula’s Megan Berner forced a turnover giving the Lady Wave one more opportunity to get the win with 8.1 seconds to play. However, the Roneagles came

up with some defense of their own forcing a turnover on the inbounds pass to secure the win.
“We had them on the ropes and let it get away,” said a proud but disappointed coach Adams. “I am really proud of our girls. We just know that this one got away.”
Juniors Hannah Griggs and Desiree Doty led the scoring for Ponchatoula with 13 and 12 points respectively. Jamey Ellis and Jasmine Nelson paced the winners with 11 and 10 points respectively.
In the consolation game, the Loranger Lady Wolves got double-digit performances out of Whitney Anthony, Dana Bruno, and Ashley Perkins to overcome a 6-10 first period deficit and earn third place honors.
Anthony led Loranger with 20 points, while Bruno poured in 14 and Perkins added 11 more for the winners. For Lutcher Betty Donald led all scorers with 30 points hitting nine field goals and going 12-of-17 from the free throw line.
