LORANGER—Three teams from District 9-3A earned a trip to the finals in the
Parish Tournament Thursday as
BLOCKED!—Amite’s Dominique Ginn (24) blocks a lay-up attempt by
Ponchatoula’s Chelsee LeMarca (22) but it was not enough as the Lady Wave rolled to
a 66-37 semi-final win and a match against Loranger in the championship game. |
Loranger, Amite and Independence join lone 5-4A
team Ponchatoula in making up the final pairings set for Friday.
The Ponchatoula Lady Wave defeated Amite 66-37 to earn a title
match with Loranger who tripped up the Independence Lady Tigers 55-46. Rivals Amite
and Independence both captured double-digit defeating Ponchatoula and Hammond
respectively to earn a spot in the boys’ title game.
The Tigers and Warriors have already met twice this season
splitting a pair of games in tournament play with the Independence winning the
first meeting in the St. Helena Tournament 53-51 and Amite winning in the Sumner
Tournament 67-52.
“This is the third time we have faced Amite this season,
and in both previous games whoever set the tempo early got the advantage,”
said Independence head coach Torrence Joseph. “Of course in both of those
early games we were without our boys that were still playing football.”
The Ponchatoula Lady Wave broke open a close game in the
second half to crush Amite 66-37 and become the only 5-A team in the Parish to
reach the finals. With just a 28-21 halftime lead, the Lady Wave depth wore
down the Lady Warriors in the third period as Ponchatoula ripped off 20 points
while allowing only 9 and then dropped in another 18 in the final period while
limiting Amite to just seven.
“I knew that they would get their points early and
if we just kept to our game plan of running girls in and out we would
eventually slow them down some,” said Ponchatoula Lady Wave
head coach Justin Adams. “They were using up a lot energy early, we just had
to stay committed to our plan.”
Desiree Doty paced the Lady Wave effort with 15 points and
teammate Lindsey Joubert added another 13. For Amite, Dominique Ginn led all
scorers with 19 points and shot 4-of-6 from the free throw line.

and Ashley Knippers combined
for seven three-pointers to lead the Lady Wolves past district rival Indepedence 55-46.
“Independence has two of the best guards in the state,
but tonight our guards showed that they can be the best,” said Loranger ladies
head Coach Amy Willie. “Our post players also did everything we asked them
to do giving us points in the paint when our outside shooting dropped off some in the second half.”
The Lady Wave and Lady Wolves faced once already this season
in the Ponchatoula Invitational Tournament with Ponchatoula scoring a decisive
61-26 win. “We lost to them early but we’re coming to play and playing
to win,” said a determined coach Willie.
Bruno finished with 16 points for Loranger while teammates
Whitney Anthony and Ashley Knippers had 15 and 12 points respectively.
Indy’s Antoinette McKnight led all scorers with 20.
In the first boys’ semi-final Amite got a 20-point effort
from Brandon Mitchell that included two dunks to eliminate 5-A Ponchatoula.
The Warriors outscored the Green Wave 16-5 in the final stanza to secure
the win. Trey Taylor, Michael Harvey, and Ace Misita were all in double-figures
for Amite with 14, 13, and 10 points respectively. The brother combo of Rob
and Matt Derenbecker led the Wave with 16 and 14 points respectively.
The Independence Tigers used a 15-6 second period run to separate
themselves from the Hammond Tornadoes and outscored the Hammond squad 27-24 in the
second half to secure the win. The scoring combo of Jasmine Dalton and Dwayne
Watkins produced a pair of twenty-plus efforts with Dalton dropping 29 and
Watkins adding 21 more.
