LORANGER—After trailing for much of the contest the Hammond Tornadoes rallied in the final minutes
PAINT WAR—Kentwood’s Alfred (right) Franklin battles Hammond’s Carderian Beale inside the paint in first round action Wednesday.
outscoring the Kentwood Roos in the final period 15-11 to secure a come-from-behind 52-50 victory and advance in the first round of action in the annual Parish Tournament hosted by Loranger High School.
“I knew coming into this game that Kentwood had beat a very good Independence team at their place so I knew we were facing a good team,” said Hammond High head coach Frederick Stewart. “I told our guys that we have to play them at our tempo and our tempo right now is about 50 to 55 points.”
The Roos used a 13-point performance by Alfred Franklin to take an early 27-25 edge at halftime. The Roos led by as much as ten at 13-3 in the first period, but Hammond changed up their defensive scheme in the second period and outscored Kentwood 16-14.
“After we got down we went with our zone trap and we were able to create a couple of quick scores off turnovers and that got our confidence back and our guys started playing better,” continued Stewart.
The Tornadoes played the Roos to a draw in the third period with each team knocking down 13 points, and in the final period there were multiple lead changes and three ties. At the 2:37 mark Hammond’s Darrell Guy stole the ball and scored on a break-away lay-up to give the Tornadoes the lead at 46-44. Behrman Ray hit another lay-up seconds later to extend the lead to 50-46. The Roos’ Mareco Walton responded hitting 2-of-2 from the free throw line to close the gap to 48-50 with just 51 seconds remaining. Guy was quickly fouled and hit the front end of a 1-and-1 to put Hammond up 51-48. A trip to the line seconds later by Walton netted one point and the Roos pulled back to within two again at 49-51.
Just a few seconds later, Hammond’s Ray was given a chance to provide some breathing room for the Tornadoes with 26 seconds left but missed two free throw attempts. The Roos took advantage getting a foul shot by Vincent Brumfield to

pull within one at 50-51 with six seconds left. The Roos then fouled Hammond’s Carderian Beale with 4.9 seconds left and he hit one of two to give the Tornadoes an uneasy lead at 52-50. The Roos got a final shot by Franklin that did not go in but it was also after the buzzard thus, Hammond secured a narrow come-from-behind win.
Both teams struggled from the line in the second half with the Tornadoes finishing 9-of-20 from the stripe, while the Roos hit 12-of-19 free shots. “Everyone that has seen us play knows that we have struggled from the line some this season,” said Stewart. “I tell the guys all the time that it is just a lack of concentration. We have to just get to the line and focus and knock them down.”
Kentwood Franklin led all scorers with 27 points, while Hammond’s Ray was next with 23 points. Guy and Beale added 12 and 11 respectively for the winners.
In the opening game of the day the Amite Lady Warriors made quick work of the Hammond Lady Tors seizing a 30-18 halftime lead and then outscored Hammond 25-9 in the third period to land the knockout punch.
“We like to get up and down the floor and play pressure basketball,” explained Amite head coach Joseph English. “Right now we are just trying to get better and better as the season goes on and improve on a style of playing.”
Tiffany Foster paced the Lady Warrior effort with 26 points and Julia Jackson was tops for Hammond with 16.
In the other boys’ contest, the Ponchatoula Green Wave advanced with a solid 67-48 win over host Loranger. The Green Wave dominated the first half outscoring the Wolves 40-19. The Wolves won the second half outscoring Ponchatoula 29-27, but the first half damage was too much to overcome.
Cotty McCalope led Ponchatoula with 17 points, while teammates Matt Derenbecker and Byron Hart added 16 and 13 respectively. Joel Johnson was tops for Loranger with 15 points and six blocked shots. Josh DePhillips had 15 more for the Wolves and teammate Lionel Lewis had 11.

TOP SCORER—Loranger’s Whitney Anthony provided the scoring punch in the Lady Wolves 53-32 rout of Kentwood. Anthony tossed in 14 points to lead all scorers.
In the second girls’ game Loranger played suffocating defense holding the Kentwood Lady Roos to only seven points over three periods in route to building a 49-7 lead with just one period left to play.
“Our girls are not as big as many of the teams they play so they know that they have to run, work hard and scrap for every ball on defense,” said Loranger head coach Amy Willie. “Our offense feeds off our defensive pressure and our ability to create turnover opportunities.”
Whitney Anthony was tops for Loranger with 14 points, while Ashley Perkins tossed in 10 more. Chelsey Gerarve and Jocelyn Willie had eight and seven points respectively for the winners, while Ronneka Robertson led the Lady Roos with 13.
Play continues Thursday in the winner’s bracket as game one features the Ponchatoula Lady Wave, who had a bye in the first round, against the Lady Warriors of Amite. Amite and Ponchatoula will get together again in the next game as the boys do battle. Game three features the Loranger Lady Wolves and the Independence Lady Tigers, and the final contest of the evening will be played between Hammond and Independence.
