LORANGER—The Ponchatoula Lady Wave and the Hammond Tornadoes overcame halftime deficits to win the girls and boys Parish Championship crown in final

day action Saturday night. The Lady Wave withstood a 15-7 first quarter run by the Lady Tors and trailed 24-23 at the half, while the Tornadoes fought off a Loranger home court advantage and a 35-32 halftime deficit in route to earning a wins.
“I could tell just watching them (Hammond) warm up that they brought their ‘A-Game’ and were ready to play,” said Ponchatoula head coach Justin Adams. “They took away our inside game and we had to rely on the outside shot. Fortunately for us our guards stepped up and made some big shots for us.”
“Loranger’s first five to six guys are solid players. We were able to wear them down a bit in the second half,” said Hammond head coach Kilavorus Thompson.
The Amite Lady Warriors and Warriors battled Loranger and Ponchatoula respectably for third place honors and enjoyed a mixed result. The Amite Ladies won 52-34, but the Amite boys lost in over time 62-51. The Independence Tigers and Lady Tigers each won fifth place consolation games over Sumner. The Lady Tigers defeated the Cowgirls 40-31, while the Tigers routed the Cowboys 71-48. The Amite Lady Warriors and Warriors battled Loranger and Ponchatoula respectably for third place honors and enjoyed a mixed result.

Lady Wave 58, Lady Tors 51
The Hammond Lady Tors opened the girls’ championship game in impressive fashion opening up an 8-2 lead over the top-seeded Ponchatoula Lady Wave on the strength of good shooting by Julia Jackson and Jasmine Manuel and solid defense in the paint. The Lady Tors extended their lead to eight by the end of the first period going up 15-7.
Ponchatoula answered in the second period as senior Desiree Dotey hit a pair of three-pointers to pace a 16-9 run to get the Lady to within one at 24-23 by halftime. Hammond traded baskets with Ponchatoula in the third with the Lady Wave gaining a slight edge outscoring the Lady Tors 16-14 to take the lead at 40-38.
With the Lady Tors continuing to limit the Lady Wave inside game, consistent outside shooting by Ponchatoula’s Chelsee Lamarca made the difference for the top-seed ladies as Lamarca finished with 17 points and paced a fourth period 19-13 run to secure the win.
Hammond’s Jackson led all scorers with 21 points, while teammate Manuel added 16 more. Dotey scored 16 for Ponchatoula.

boys’ championship game riding the shooting of senior Lionel Lewis to a 35-32 lead over Hammond at halftime. The Wolves, who knocked off number one seed Amite 84-82 in the semi-final round, seemed poised to upset the number two-seeded Tornadoes. However with limited bench help, Hammond used a full court press to wear down the Loranger starters and the outside-inside combination of seniors Carderion Beale and John Burris paced a furious 17-10 run in the final period to secure a Tornado win. Burris would finish with 17 points in the paint, while Beale tossed in 12 from around the arc.
“We knew they were solid at the starting positions and our game plan was to try to wear them down with pressure defense,” said Hammond head coach Kilavorus Thompson. “They (Loranger) played a good game. For us, our defense was able to step up at the end and create points off of turnovers.”
“I was proud of the effort. Our kids were tired but kept working hard to try and make plays,” said Loranger head coach Wash Edwards. “Our starters played a lot minutes and they (Hammond) were able to take advantage with their pressure defense.”
Hammond scored the first seven points of the game before Loranger answered with a 4-0 run. The Tornadoes led by as much as eight at 18-10 at the 1:39 mark before senior Josh DePhillips and Lewis dropped in back-to-back three-pointers to pull the Wolves to within two at 18-16. Hammond answered with a shot by sophomore Terrance Bridges to take a 20-16 first period lead.
Loranger went 5-for-7 from the charity stripe in the second period and outscored Hammond 6-2 in the final minute and a half to take a 35-32 advantage at the half. The Wolves built on their lead early in the third going up by four at 43-39 on a jumper by senior LJ Holland at the 4:30 mark. Bridges and Burris hit unanswered shots to pull Hammond back even at 43 with 3:26 showing. The two teams swapped baskets the rest of the period with the Tornadoes owning a narrow 51-50 lead after three.
Fatigue and defense would settle it in the final period as Hammond unleashed full-court pressure on Loranger creating 12 points off turnovers. The Wolves stayed within reach trailing 61-58 with 1:45 remaining, but the Tornadoes would outscore Loranger 7-2 the rest of the way to secure the win.
For Loranger, Lewis led all scorers finishing with 21 points and fellow senior Marc Chambers added 16.
