about earning double-digit wins over Amite and Loranger respectively to advance
to Saturday’s championship game, the boys

offered up a pair of last second
thrillers with Loranger winning in overtime 84-82 over Amite and Hammond
surviving in regulation over Ponchatoula 52-51.
Lady Wave 70, Lady Warriors 42
The Amite Lady Warriors owned an early 5-4 lead in the first
period on a jumper by Venisha Burton with 6:08 showing, but an 18-3 run by Ponchatoula
erased any hopes of Amite’s plans to upset the tournament’s
number seed. Senior
Desiree Doty dropped in a pair of three-pointers to pace the run and would
finish with 15 points to lead the Lady Wave. The Lady Wave increased
their margin by as much as 32 points at 67-35 at the 2:35 mark of the final
period on a shot by Bailie Savoy.
Along with Doty, Antoinette Pea and Megen Berner finished
in double-figures with Pea scoring 13 points and Berner adding 12. Amite’s Whitney
Williams was tops for the Lady Warriors with 22 points.
Loranger 84, Amite 82
Loranger’s Lionel Lewis scored 30 points in regulation
and teammate Marc Chambers dropped in six in overtime including the game winner
with a second left to give the Wolves an 84-82 win over Amite and their
first ever appearance in the Parish championship game set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
Lewis would finish with 32 points, while Chambers netted 24.
There were three ties and one lead change in the opening period as
Amite took the advantage at 17-13 after one. The Wolves answered early in the second
period going on a 14-0 run to take a 10 point lead at 27-17 at the 5:16 mark.
The Warriors responded and cut the margin to 36-33 by halftime.
Amite owned the third period outscoring the Wolves 19-10 to earn
their biggest lead of the night at 52-46 at the end of three periods. Chambers,
who had scored only ten points at the 4:15 mark of the final period hit a jumper
to tie the score at 55

apiece and then scored 14 more points down the stretch
to rally Loranger to victory.
Thomas Hart of Amite cashed in an old school three-point play with
18 seconds left to give the Warriors a 67-66 lead. Chambers returned the favor seconds
later hitting a lay-up and sinking a free throw to put Loranger up 69-67. Hart was
clutch again for Amite and tied the game with a drive and lay-up to tie the game at
69 at the end of regulation.
In overtime, the two teams exchanged baskets knotting the score
at 82 with just 18 seconds left. Lewis took the end bounds pass and drove down for a
shot in the paint that was missed with three seconds left, but a put back by
Chambers won it for the Wolves.
Lady Tors 51, Lady Wolves 38
The Hammond Lady Tors had to withstand the outside shooting of the
Loranger Lady Wolves in their 51-38 semifinal win. Hammond seemed to be in control at the
outset of the game jumping out to a 9-2 lead, but a trio of three-point goals by the Lady
Wolves tied the game at 11-11. Another three-pointer by Loranger's senior Ashley Knippers put the Lady Wolves ahead for the first time at 14-11 with 5:57 left to play in the first half.
The contest would see-saw back-and-forth with each team sharing either
a one or two point advantage until the end of the half. The Lady Tors outgunned
Loranger 7-6 in the second period to take a narrow 18-17 advantage at the half.
The Lady Tors took the lead for good midway in the third quarter
when senior Sara Perrilloux nailed a 3-pointer to make it 25-22 and then senior
Brooke Lanier added a lay-up to stretch the lead to 27-23. Hammond outshot
Loranger 18-12 in the period to take a 36-29 lead entering the fourth quarter.
The Lady Tors took control in the opening moments of the final
period when senior Jasmine Manuel scored on a three-point play and then Lanier hit on a
turn-around jumper in the lane to give Hammond its largest lead at 38-29. Junior
Christy Pinestraw and Manuel would later score on a pair of lay-up shots to
increase Hammond’s lead to 44-31. The Lady Wolves were unable to cut the
deficit to under double-digits the rest of the way as the Lady Tors
finished the quarter outscoring Loranger 15-9 in the period to seal the win.
Jasmine Cyprian led Hammond scoring with 13 points, followed by Manuel
with 12 and Julia Jackson and Perilloux each added six points apiece. Loranger was
led by senior Whitney Anthony with 19 points, followed by Knippers with 10,
including three, three-point goals and senior Dana Bruno added six points.
Hammond 52, Ponchatoula 51
The Hammond Tornadoes withstood a late Ponchatoula rally in capturing
a 52-51 semifinal victory in the

Tangipahoa Parish tourney. Ponchatoula jumped out
to a 14-10 first quarter lead, but the Tornadoes went to full-court pressure
defense in the second period forcing the Green Wave into hurried shots and
turnovers. Hammond capitalized by going on a 8-2 run in the quarter and
outscored Ponchatoula 21-14 in the period to take a 31-28 edge at the half.
Hammond senior John Burris led the scoring surge for the
Tors by connecting on a three-point play and then senior Dustin Weber scored on a
hook shot. Ponchatoula cut the deficit to two at 33-31 on a three-pointer by
sophomore Matt Derenbecker in the opening moments of the third quarter. However,
the Green Wave could not take the lead as Hammond kept a two or four point
lead and outscored Ponchatoula 14-13 in the period to make
it 44-42 heading into the final quarter.
Ponchatoula cut it to 52-51 on a three-point basket by Derenbecker
with 2:16 remaining to make it 52-51. Hammond held the ball for the next two minutes
before giving it up on a turnover. Ponchatoula called timeout to setup a final shot.
Derenbecker was fouled on a reach in but missed on the front end of a 1-and-1 free
throw. Hammond rebounded and the Tors ran out the clock sealing the one-point win
and a berth into the finals against the Loranger Wolves.
Weber and Burris each led the Tors in scoring with 11 points
apiece, followed by junior Ellis Marshall with 10 and senior Carderion
Beale added six points. Ponchatoula was led by Derenbecker with 24 points,
including two three-point goals. Sophomore Demyrio Bell followed with six and
senior Coty McCalope added five points. Rob Derenbecker, Byron Hart and Trey Howard each had six points apiece for the Green Wave.
