LORANGER—Championship Friday lived up to its billing in the final day of competition in the Parish Tournament as
WINNING FREE THROW— Brantly Brumfield's second free throws attempt drops in to give the Tigers a 67-66 win in the boys’ title game.
arch-rivals Amite and Independence played a thriller won by the Tigers 67-66, and Ponchatoula fans got an early Christmas present winning the girls championship 50-34 over Loranger and defeating long-time rival Hammond 76-63 for the first time in eight years in the boys’ consolation game.
Brantly Brumfield hit one of two free throws with just four seconds left to give the Independence Tigers a 67-66 win over Amite in the boys’ championship game.
“This was another classic Amite-Independence game—the kind of game that fuels the rivalry between the two schools,” said Independence boys’ head coach Torrence Joseph. “We are glad and feel fortunate to come out on top in this one.”
Paced by an impressive inside-outside shooting performance by Jasmine Dalton, who scored 18 first half points, the Independence Tigers jumped out to 10-point lead at 16-6 after one period. Amite answered in the second period with full court defensive pressure and rallied with a 34-point scoring burst to vault into the lead at 40-37 by halftime.
“They switched to a press that we really did not expect

and it kind of caught us off guard and led to a big scoring period for them,” said Joseph. “I just tried to tell the guys to not get down and keep working hard and we were able to come out and hold our own in the third quarter.”
The Tigers outscored Amite 16-14 in the third period to get to within one at 53-54 with one period to play. The Warriors scored two unanswered to go up 59-55 with 4:43 left and then after the Tigers pulled to within two at 61-59, a three-pointer by Ace Misita, two free throws by Mickeal Gardner, and a baseline jumper by Jarvis Foster extended the Warrior lead to 66-59.
Brumfield hit a two pointer with 2:39 left to help the Tigers close the gap to 66-61 and then Dwayne Watkins nailed a three-pointer to put the Tigers to within two at 66-64 with 1:34 left. Dalton tied it at 66 all with a put-back off an offensive rebound with 1:10 left. Both teams exchange missed opportunities to get the win and then off an out-of-bounds play Brumfield drove into the lane to draw the foul that sent him to the line to win it.
“We have a drill we run in practice all the time where

we put guys on the line in a pressure situation and they cannot leave the line until they execute,” continued Joseph. “I told Brantly just make at least one and we’ll we alright, and I was glad he was able to get the job done.”
Dalton finished the game with 25 points while teammate Watkins added 21 more for the winners. Brumfield went 1-of-2 from the line and finished with 10 points. For Amite, Mitchell was limited to just one point in the second half and finished with 23, while Michael Harvey was tops for the Warriors with 28.
Ponchatoula fans were treated to a pair of wins as the Lady Wave outscored a feisty Loranger team 50-34 to claim the championship and in an earlier consolation game the Ponchatoula boys used a 41-point performance by Matt Derenbecker to make a little history by defeating long-time rival Hammond for the first time in eight years.
The top-seeded Lady Wave ran into a determined Loranger squad and managed only a 28-22 lead by halftime. “We didn’t shoot well tonight, but our defense and our ability to run people in and out keeping us fresh helped us get the win” said Ponchatoula ladies head coach Justin Adams.
Lindsey Joubert and Bria Bohana led Ponchatoula with 11 and 10 points

respectively and the team went 11-18 from the free throw stripe. For Loranger Whitney Anthony was tops with 13 points and Baileigh Bankston and Ashley Knippers each had six.
In the boys consolation game, the Green Wave overcame a 24-9 first period rout by Hammond when Matt Derenbecker caught fire and tossed in a tournament high 41 points to lead a come back and eventual double-digit win. The Green Wave closed the gap two three at the half at 33-36, and then outscored Hammond 42-27 in the final two stanzas.
“Hammond has had some great teams over the years and for us this is one of the biggest wins in a long time,” said Ponchatoula boys’ head coach Clint Husser. “This is a young team and they are still learning how to be consistent and put together solid games back-to-back.”
Behrman Ray led Hammond with 23 point and teammate Christopher Brown added 12.
In the girls’ consolation game, the Independence Lady Tigers outlasted Amite to take a 46-39 win. Sharp-shooting guards Antoinette McKnight and Calisha Johnson finished in double-figures with 17 and 10 points respectively.
