LADY WAVE INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT — Day 3
Tangi Parish takes it on the chin as Ponchatoula, St. Thomas and Loranger all fall.
Denham Springs edges the Lady Wave 48-44, while St. Thomas loses to Lafayette 39-31 and the Lady Wolves
get crushed by South Lafourche 70-39.
PONCHATOULA—Tangipahoa girls’ basketball took it on the chin on the final day of play at
the Ponchatoula Holiday Invitational as all three parish teams were defeated. Ponchatoula

while St. Thomas lost to Lafayette and Loranger was crushed
by South Lafourche. The Lady Wave and the Lady Falcons finished the event with a 2-1
mark, while Loranger went 0-3.
“Obviously this was a tough loss for us tonight, but we did not play
well and credit Denham Springs on a solid effort,” said Ponchatoula head coach Justin Adams.
“Overall we are pleased with the tournament. We had three days of great competition between
some of the better programs in the state and the crowds were good all three days.”
Denham Springs 48, Ponchatoula 44
The Denham Springs Lady Yellow Jackets scored the first eight points of
the third period to break open a close game led by Ponchatoula at halftime 21-20. The Lady
Yellow Jackets extended their margin to ten at 34-24 with 1:53 remaining and hit 7-of-13
free throws in the final four minutes to hold off a Lady Wave rally that saw Ponchatoula
pull to within three at 44-41 with just under two minutes remaining.
K. Lee led Denham Spring with 15 points, while Antoinette Pea had 11 and
teammate Megen Berner had 10 for Ponchatoula.
Lafayette 39, St. Thomas 31
The Lafayette Lady Lions opened with an 8-2 run, but a rally capped off by
a three-point shot by Christy Shelby put the Lady Falcons up 9-8 with 3:56 still showing in the
first period. The two teams tied the score at 11 before St. Thomas took a 17-15 advantage to
end the quarter. The Lady Lions shutout St. Thomas in the second period 8-0 getting four
points by Amber Vertroy to pace the run. Vertroy would finish with nine.
The two teams played solid defense in the second half as both teams
held the other under ten points in the third and fourth periods. The Lady Falcons won the
third stanza 8-6, while Lafayette outscored St. Thomas 9-6 in the fourth period.
Sedreka Plummer and Andriene Prejean each had eight for the winners.
Shelby finished with 13 for St. Thomas and teammate Megan Kinchen had 12 including three treys.
South Lafourche 70, Loranger 39
The Lady Tarpons broke open a close contest in the second period outscoring
the Lady Wolves 18-10 to take a 31-18 advantage at halftime. Jance Lombas sparked the effort
scoring six of her twelve points in the period. South Lafourche shut the door on
Loranger in the third period outscoring the Wolves 21-9 and coasted the rest of the way to victory.
Kallie Populis was tops for Loranger with 14 followed
by Raylin Willie who added eight.
