INDEPENDENCE—The Edna Karr Lady Cougars ended the Independence Lady Tigers playoff run Monday night escaping with a 43-36 win. Both teams struggled

offensively and from the free throw line. The Lady Tigers hit only 9-of-23 tries from the free stripe, while the Lady Cougars managed only 7-of-16.
“We were fortunate that they (Independence) struggled a bit from the line tonight because we were not hitting our shots early,” said Karr head Douglas Blackman. “Indy’s (Antoinette) McKnight was terrific. She gave us trouble all night.”
The Lady Tigers took a slim early margin in the opening period outscoring Karr 10-9 and led by as much as three at 10-7 with 1:02 left when senior Calisha Johnson hit a layup.
“I felt like we had the right tempo, and we were able to counter their height advantage with speed and create turnovers from their guards,” explained Independence head coach Kovi Dillion-Gilmore. “We played well and rebounded with them, but we just missed too many shots from the floor and our free throw shooting was just not there.”
Independence opened the second period with an 8-4 run to extend their led to 18-13 with 4:18 left when senior Antoinette McKnight hit a three-pointer. The Lady Cougars answered, however, scoring the last eight points of the half to take 21-18 advantage.
“Our guard play has not been good all year and they were able to put pressure on us at the point of attack and create turnovers,” said Blackman. “We got out of our man-to-man and switched to a one-three-one defense and were finally able to slow down their guards some.”
Benefiting from a strong second half performance by senior Jessica Barlow, who scored eight of her 12 points in the final two periods, Karr built a 27-21 lead with 5:11 still left in the third. The Lady Tigers mounted a charge in the closing two minutes to close the gap to three at 34-31 when McKnight hit one of her three game high three-pointers with four seconds left in the period.
“Antoinette (McKnight) played her heart out,” said Lady Tiger coach Dillion-Gilmore. “She hurt her ankle bad early in the game, but got up and gave us another solid performance.”
Down three with one period left, the Lady Tigers cut it to one on a layup by Johnson with 7:46 remaining. Then four possessions later Johnson tied at 36 with 4:37 left hitting one-of-two free throw attempts. However, Independence would not score again as shooting woes continued down the stretch, while Karr reeled off seven unanswered points to get the victory.
“I am proud of all the girls, and we will miss our three seniors,” continued coach Dillion-Gilmore. “The experience of winning our first playoff game and playing in another one was good for our returning players and will give us something to build on.”
McKnight led all scorers with 25 points, while teammate Johnson finished with six. Along with Barlow’s 12 points, Twanisha Tillman finished in double-figures for Karr with 11.
