ranked Springfield Bulldogs.
The victory earned the Falcons a one-game lead over Springfield as St.
Thomas kept their district mark perfect at 6-0, while the Bulldogs dropped to 5-1.
“Springfield has such a rich basketball tradition and the
last couple of years we have become more competitive with them and
our people are starting to believe that we can compete with them,”
said St. Thomas head coach Errol Gauff. “Both schools had great fan
support tonight and it was just a great high school basketball atmosphere.”
The Falcons scored the first five points of the contest
before giving up a basket to Springfield at 5-2, but that is as close as the
Bulldogs would get as St. Thomas played full court defense and converted
turnovers into transition points in route to a 20-6 romp in the first period.
“I knew that we could come out with a lot of energy

and emotion playing a very good Springfield team at home, but the
fact that we were able to use that emotion to create turnovers and
early baskets really propelled us through the rest of the game,” continued Gauff.
On the strength of inside scoring by senior Daniel McAfee and
outside shooting by junior Thaddeus Showers and sophomore Raymond Andrews the
Falcons all but closed the deal in the second period outscoring Springfield
20-10 to take a commanding 40-16 halftime advantage. McAfee and Andrews
tossed in eight first half points, while Showers led all scorers with 12 after two.
“We had not played a team that showed that kind of
intensity until tonight,” said Springfield head coach Mark Erdey.
“They ran the floor, rebounded and just did everything well and it
took us a while to catch up.”
The Bulldogs did “catch up” a bit in the second half outscoring
the Falcons 36-32, but the damage was already done as St. Thomas coasted to a 20-point win.
Showers tossed in another eight points to lead all scorers with 20, while Andrews
and McAfee were next with 14 and 12 respectively for the winners.
Senior Michael Williams also finished in double figures for the Falcons
with 10. For the Bulldogs, Bryce Walker led with 11 points, while teammates
A.J. Johnson and Josh Bridges each added eight.
Both teams continue district play on Friday as St. Thomas (22-5)
goes on the road to face Doyle and Springfield (18-7) hosts Sumner.
