INDEPENDENCE—In a battle between the unbeaten girls’ teams in District 9-3A, the Amite Lady Warriors rallied

from an early ten-point deficit to hand the home-standing Independence Lady Tigers a 57-45 setback. The win gave the Lady Warriors (12-8, 4-0) the early lead in the race for the district crown. The Lady Tigers (12-3, 3-1) dropped into a second place tie with Albany.
“This is a tough district and if you want to win it, you have to beat some folks on the road,” said Amite head coach Joseph English. “Independence created a great atmosphere and got it going early, but our girls were able to bounce back in the second half and come away with the win.”
The Independence scoring duo of Calisha Johnson and Antoinette McKnight scored the first four points of the game and they combined for eight more points to help the Lady Tigers build an early 15-8 first period lead. Early in the second stanza, the Lady Tigers created points off turnovers and extended their lead to double-digits at 23-13 when McKnight hit a layup with 5:40 left in the second. However, Independence would score only five more points before halftime while Amite poured in 13. Led by Tiffany Foster, who scored six of her eight first half points in the second period, the Lady Warriors pulled to within two at 26-28 at the break.
The two teams traded baskets early in the third period and at the 4:22 mark, the score was knotted at 33 apiece when Dominique Ginn hit a short jumper. The score was tied again at the 3:05 mark when Foster hit a layup to knot it at 37. Independence then took their final lead of the game when McKnight hit a jumper with 2:48 left to put the Lady Tigers up 39-37. On the ensuing possession, Ginn hit a three-point shot at the 2:37 mark to give Amite its first lead at 40-39. The Lady

Warriors quickly secured their first advantage going on an 11-1 run to finish the third period with a 51-40 lead.
“I knew that this would be a game of runs by both teams and we were not able to withstand their run in the third period,” said Independence head coach Kovi Dillion-Gilmore. “They did a good job to come back on us and played solid and under control in the second half.”
Points were scarce in the final period as Amite slowed down the pace forcing Independence to foul as a way of gaining possession. The Lady Warriors scored only six more points, but the damage was done and Amite secured the win.
McKnight led all scorers with 17 points, while teammate Kevondia Roberts added 14. For Amite, Brittany Woods dropped in three, three-pointers in route to rolling up 16 points. Teammates Foster and Ginn added 14 and 13 points respectively.
