PONCHATOULA—The Ponchatoula Lady Wave took over sole possession of first place in District 4-5A with a 62-57 win over highly regarded Northshore Tuesday night. The
RISING STAR—Ponchatoula sophomore Antoinette Pea came off the bench to score six first half points to help the Lady Wave outscore Northshore 20-6 in the second period.
victory put the Lady Wave at 3-0 in district play and 19-8 overall while the Lady Panthers dropped to 2-1 in district and 16-3 on the year.
“It was a total team effort tonight,” said an elated Justin Adams, the Ponchatoula head coach. “It is a very big win for our program. It is the first time we have been in first place by ourselves in this district since I have been here.”
Ponchatoula and Northshore traded baskets early in the first period with the Lady Wave taking a slim 12-10 lead after one on a short jumper by Desiree Doty with just nine seconds left.
In the second period, Ponchatoula capitalized on some impressive full court defensive pressure and outscored the Lady Panthers 20-6 taking a commanding 32-16 halftime lead. Chelsee LeMarca paced the Lady Wave first half scoring with eight while teammates Lindsey Joubert and Antoinette Pea each scored six.
“I felt like we did a good job of containing their shooters in the first half and creating scoring opportunities off our defensive pressure,” continued Coach Adams.
The Lady Panthers came out in the third period and quickly shaved six points of the Ponchatoula lead as Karissa Claybrook hit a couple three-pointers from the parking lot. Northshore pulled to within seven two times in the period with the last time being at the 5:42 mark when Claybrook hit a jumper to put the score at 27-34, but a jumper by Megan Berner with 1:09 left and a free throw by Doty seconds later put the Lady Wave back up by 10 at 43-33.
“I told the girls that they were going to come out and make some big shots in the second half and just keep your composure, play defense, make foul shots and we will be ok,” said Coach Adams.
The Lady Wave scored the first four points of the final period to extend their lead to 48-34 with 6:43 remaining, but that was the biggest margin Ponchatoula would enjoy as three-point shooting by Claybrook and inside scoring by Tiffany Aidoo helped the Lady Panthers close the gap to within three at 56-59 with 1:13 showing on the game clock.
“I knew that they would shoot the ball well and Claybrook and Aidoo would get their share of points,” said Coach Adams. “Our game plan was to slow down their

outside shooting, but we got caught out of position on our press at times in the second half and that opened up some shots for them.”
With time running out, Northshore sent Ponchatoula’s Theresa Pevy and Hannah Griggs to the line and the two went 3-of-4 to secure a four-point win.
“They got it down to three twice in the final minutes, but we were able to make some big free throws down the stretch and maintain a lead,” said Coach Adams.
Joubert led the Lady Wave balanced scoring with 11 points and Megan Berner was next with nine. For Northshore, the sharp shooting duo of Claybrook and Aidoo paced the Lady Panther effort with 23 and 19 points respectively. Claybrook finished the game with six three-pointers.
The Lady Wave continues district play on Friday as they take their show on the road for a battle with rival Covington. “I feel like our girls understand what our goal is and they have to come ready to play every single night and the only game we are concerned about is the next one,” concluded Coach Adams.
