prep action Thursday night. The Tigers
defeated the Cowboys 79-52, while the Lady Tigers won 66-50 over the Cowgirls.
The Lady Raiders of Pine advanced with a 55-31 rout of the
Mt. Hermon Yellow Jackets.
Four Lady Tigers finished in double figures as Independence rolled
up 66 points in route to a 16-point win over the Sumner Cowgirls.
“Our girls played well enough on defense grabbing 29 rebounds
and blocking 13 shots,” said Sumner head coach Joanie Booty. “We just did not
get it done at the free throw line shooting only 6-of-21. We were are own worst enemy at the line.”
Indy’s Caleisha Johnson scored 15 of her 20 total points in
the first half helping the Lady Tigers take a 33-23 lead at the half. Sumner
outscored Indy 15-14 in the third period to get within nine, but solid shooting
performances from Antionette McKnight and Kevondia Roberts, who finished with
16 and 13 points respectively, helped to seal the deal for the Lady Tigers.
L. Strickland was the fourth Lady Tiger in double figures with 10.
Cally Ballard was tops for Sumner with 15 points followed by Lacius Dyson who added 13 more.
In the opening game the Lady Raiders of Pine made quick work of the
Mt. Herman Lady Yellow Jackets cruising to a 55-31 win on the strength of Rolanda
Bickham’s 19-point scoring. Juane White was also in double digits for the Lady Raiders

In the only boys’ game of the second round, the Tigers jumped out
to an early 15-9 lead over Sumner and never looked back. Jay Holmes led the Tigers
with 18 points scoring 15 of his total in the first half. Three more Tigers finished
in double figures. Deon Holmes had 12, while Brantly Brumfield and Marvin Jackson each
had 10 for the winners.
Sumner’s Chris Jackson led all scorers with 20 points and
Antonio Robertson added eight more.
The Tigers will advance to play in the championship game on
Saturday, while the Cowboys will play the consolation game also slated for Saturday. Amite will
