SUMNER—The Sumner Cowboys tipped off their annual Classic Basketball Tournament in
high fashion

Wednesday night by putting cross-town rival Kentwood “out to pasture” with a
47-31 win. In other first round action, the Independence Lady Tigers defeated the Kentwood
Lady Roos 65-29, while the Amite Warriors knocked off the Pine Raiders 52-46.
“Overall the first day was a success,” said Sumner head
coach Levar James. “The first game between Indy and Kentwood was close in the
first half and the Amite-Pine game was very competitive. We started out sluggish
in our game against Kentwood, but were able to get our offense going in the second half.”
Led by senior Devon Coleman, the Cowboys broke open a 16-10
halftime lead in the third period outscoring the Kentwood Roos 19-10 to take a 35-20
advantage with one period left to play. The Roos matched the Cowboys in the final period
scoring 11 while only giving up 12, but the damage was done and Sumner walked away with the
double-digit win.
“Kentwood defended our inside game well in the first half and it
took us a while to adjust to it,” said James. “We got our own defense going in the second
half and that opened up more transition opportunities.”
Senior Chris Jackson finished in double figures for Sumner with 10 points,
while Vincent Brumfield paced the Roos with 10.
In the opening game between the Independence Lady Tigers and the
Kentwood Lady Roos, the Lady Tigers scored the most points of any team in the first round
defeating the Roos 65-29. The sharp-shooting duo of Antoinette McKnight and Cassandra
Johnson led
Independence with 26 and 14 points respectively. Shaneual Miller and Sylevia
Tapin each had nine for the Lady Roos.
The Amite Warriors used a 22-12 opening period effort to set the

pace for a 52-46 win over the Pine Raiders in the second game. The Raiders outscored the
Warriors the rest of the way 35-30, but could not overcome a 10-point first period deficit.
Michael Harvey was tops for Amite with 15 points, while
Pine’s Craig Cooper won the three-point shooting battle knocking down five in route to leading
all scorers with 18 points.
Action continues Thursday with the Pine Lady Raiders taking on
the Mt. Herman Yellowjackets in the 5:30 game followed by the Tigers of Indy verses the
Cowboys of Sumner in the 7:00 game. The Cowgirls of Sumner will entertain
the Independence ladies in the nightcap game at 8:30.
