TANGIPAHOA—The Independence Lady Tigers and the Amite Warriors scored double-digits
wins to claim the girls’ and boys’ 2006 Cowboy Classic Championship in

action Saturday night at Sumner High. Independence defeated Pine 62-38 and the
Warriors got the best of 3A district rival Independence 67-52. Host, the Sumner
Cowboys, claimed the third place boys’ trophy routing Mt. Herman 62-39, and the
Franklinton Lady Demons collect the girls’ consolation trophy with a 68-54 win
over the Sumner Lady Cowgirls.
Sharpshooters Michael Harvey of Amite and Dewayne Watkins of
Independence did battle in the boys’ championship with Watkins winning the points
battle with 20, while Harvey had 17, but got the win. The Tigers outscored the
Warriors in the opening period 20-14, but could manage only six more points by the
half. Amite poured in another 14 to take a 28-26 advantage at halftime. The Warriors
got three more players into double-figures in the second half outgunning the Tiger
39-26 to secure the win.
Amite’s Brandon Mitchell scored 15, and Chad Jones and Thomas Hart
added 11 and 10 respectively for the winners. Jay Holmes contributed 12 for the Tigers.

Johnson combined for 42 of Indy’s point total to capture the girls’ title over Pine 62-38.
McKnight was tops with 32 points and 6-of-7 from the free throw line,
while Johnson added ten more and dished out 11 assists.
“We played our most complete game so far,” said Lady Tiger head coach
Kovi Dillion. “We had excellent movement and control on offense and our defense created a
lot of scoring opportunities off of steals.”
Raven Luper led the Pine Lady Raiders with 12 points and
teammate Taneisha Davis added eight more.
In the boys’ consolation senior forward Devin Coleman worked
in the paint for a game high 28 points in leading his Sumner Cowboys to a 62-39
thrashing of the Mt. Hermon Yellow Jackets. After being up only 33-28 at the half,

corralled in the second half limiting them to only
11 points, while scoring 29. Patrick Fair and Damarco Tate were tops for Mt. Hermon
in scoring with Fair tossing in 14 points and Tate adding 10 more.
In a tale of two halves, the Franklinton Lady Demons won the second
half of the girls’ consolation game 46-27 to take third place 68-54 from the Cowgirls of Sumner.
The Cowgirls jumped out to an early 26-22 halftime advantage on the strength of an 11-point
performance by Lacius Dyson. However, the trio of Brittany Taylor, Tiera Matthews,
and Johettica Manning got hot in the second half and scorched the nets for 47 of
Franklinton’s total points. Taylor was tops with 17, while Matthews and Manning
added 16 and 14 respectively.
The girls’ all-tournament team included: Antionette McKnight
and Caleisha Johnson of Indy; Rolanda Bickham and Raven Luper of Pine; K. Martin of
Franklinton and Tiarra Briggs of Sumner. On the boys’ side, all-tournament selections
included: Michael Harvey and Brandon Mitchell of Amite; Dewayne Watkins and
Jay Holmes of Indy; and Devin Coleman and Chris Jackson of Sumner.
