pairing up for four jamboree contests. Coaches and fans got an
early look at their teams in live action as all four contests proved to be
competitive and entertaining.
“When we put the pairings together, we put a lot thought into
making the match-ups competitive,” said Hammond High head coach Frederick
Stewart. “Certainly some of the teams still have players playing football.”
The nightcap game between Hammond and the Amite Warriors saw
the Tornadoes overcome a two-point halftime deficit to hand the Warriors a 45-41
setback. Hammond trailed 22-20 at the half, but stormed back to outscore
Amite 25-19 in the second half.
“Amite is Amite,” said Stewart. “You always know what you are
going to get. They rebound and play solid defense and are well coached.”
Senior Warren Baker led Hammond with 17 points, while junior
Behrman Ray added 15. For Amite, Michael Harvey posted the night’s best offensive
performance 27 points. The Tornadoes will host Independence in their
home opener on November 14.
Loranger and Sumner did battle in the first game with the Wolves
biting the Cowboys 48-37. The game produced the most points of the evening for a
total of 85 between the two schools. Sumner held a 22-21 lead at

the half, but
Loranger rallied in the second half outscoring the Cowboys 27-15. Junior Marc
Chambers paced a solid inside game for the Wolves leading all scorers with 15 points,
while junior Jered Gilliland paced the Cowboy’s effort with 12 points.
The second game featured a rumble between the Independence Tigers
and the Covington Lions. The Tiger’s Dwyane Watkins poured in 22 points to lead
Independence to a 39-28 victory. Freshman Paul Fontenot led the Lion effort with
eight points. The Tigers enjoyed a 29-14 halftime lead and fought off an early
flurry by the Lions in the second half to secure the win.
The St. Helena Hawks and the Springfield Bulldogs put on a defensive
show in the third game as the Bulldogs managed only a 13-8 lead at the half.
Both teams enjoyed two-point leads in the second half, but Springfield got
the better of it to claim a 27-24 win. Springfield’s Shabass Danzler
led all scorers with six points, while Daniel Curry added five for St. Helena.
